By Marisol De Los Santos January 11, 2024

If the thought of planning for another extended weekend feels overwhelming, don't worry—Macaroni KID has got you covered.

Thanks to community volunteers in Edison, Highland Park, and Metuchen, we have a variety of activities to learn, mingle, or disconnect from the real world. Consider these possibilities for the weekend and click on the links for all the details!

1. Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at one of four events in the area. The Edison Recreation Department will celebrate Dr. King's birthday with a special performance by the Eastside Dance Program on Saturday, January 13. On the same day, the Metuchen Human Rights Commission invites everyone to gather at Thomas Peterson Park, the new pocket park on Main Street, for a collective reflection on Martin Luther King's words. Moving on to Monday, January 15, the Zone 6 HP Teen Center will host an MLK Day Celebration at Highland Park High School. Lastly, on the same day, you're encouraged to participate in the Mitzvah Community Day of Service organized by the JCC of Middlesex County and the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen.

2. Learn more about Dr. King in the comfort of your own home. Take a few minutes to listen to the famous “I Have a Dream” speech or download the Honoring Dr. King Activities PDF provided by the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

3. Escape the frigid cold in a 90-degree pool at The GoldFish Swim School Grand Opening, located right next door to BJ’s on  Route 1 in Edison on Saturday, January 13.

4. Support local artists and experience Matilda The Musical Jr produced by Fresh Theatre Arts at Highland Park High School on Thursday, January 11, and Sunday, January 13.

5. Sign up for CertifiKID and save up to 40% on movie tickets.
