Make the most of winter break by spending time together

By Marisol De Los Santos December 20, 2023

The holiday season brings lots of fun with friends and family, but after all the seasonal fun has passed, you may wonder what to do with the kids for their winter break. Even though boredom is good for kids and encourages creativity, you may want to have a few options on hand to give yourself a break. These ideas will help you make the most of your kid’s winter break ... and give you a chance to make a few memories along the way.

1. Visit your local library

Take the kids on a trip to your local library. This is a great way to encourage them to read over the break and get them out of the house for the afternoon. On Dec. 27 Metuchen Public Library will host Vacation Game Time and the Edison Public Library will host Game Day for Tweens & Teens. Registration is strongly recommended for both.

2. Have a holiday movie marathon

Spend some time bingeing on all your favorite holiday movies. Let the family pick a movie, grab some snacks, and cozy up.

3. Host a playdate

Playdates over winter break will allow your kids to see their friends and give you a break ... win-win!

4. Get in the kitchen

Embracing the kitchen life! Cooking isn't just about a healthy diet and mastering math skills – it's a blast! Plus, it's the perfect way to keep those family recipes and traditions alive. You can either revisit your family recipes or try something new, like a kid-friendly soup recipe, or indulge in the sweetness of Easy Chocolate Banana Bread.

5. Create a Bored Container

We've got 101 solutions for kids who claim there's nothing to do! These screen-free ideas will keep children entertained at home, regardless of the season. Infuse some fun by turning it into a game—craft a personalized Bored Container using a reclaimed item, and let the excitement unfold!

6. Get outside

Get cozy, if necessary, and make your way to a nearby park or playground. There's nothing like a bit of fresh air and exercise outdoors, even in cooler weather! Discover a new hike or bike trail in Middlesex County or explore East Jersey Old Time Village. And if winter is your thing, glide across the ice at Roosevelt Park.

7. Donate unwanted toys or clothes

Donating old toys and clothes to charity helps teach your kids to appreciate what they have. It also helps make room for any new holiday gifts they may receive. You can also find out if any local shelters or other nonprofits could use a helping hand! Many can find ways for kids to volunteer with a parent.

8. Go bowling

An afternoon at a bowling alley is always a great time!
